One of the benefits of aging is that you don’t tolerate annoying situations, like at pop concerts. Experience plus wealth provides the freedom to spontaneously choose how and where one spends their leisure time. No more enduring unpleasant conditions for the sake of something different.
Last night I was hailed outside the Aussie Stadium shortly after the start of the Robbie Williams concert. It was a couple approaching their sixties who climbed in and requested a swish City hotel. He was a portly chap, debonair in smart, casual attire whilst she was statuesque in a stylish summer dress, retaining obvious beauty from her youth.
The gentleman then politely requested I close the windows due a blustering wind off the coast. ‘Were you at the concert ?’, I asked. ‘Yes, but we only lasted three songs’, he laughed. ‘The wind was terribly uncomfortable and we decided we couldn’t be bothered after all’. ‘It was also very loud’, his wife lamented. ‘Plus we weren’t quite prepared for Robbie’s swearing’. I wonder if he repeated his desire of three years ago, to find a wife here, with big breasts.
‘You’re not from Sydney ?’. I asked. ‘No, we travelled up from Melbourne. Though it’s ironic’, he chuckled, ‘we didn’t want to see Williams there because we don’t like the Rod Laver Arena, the access is bad and it’s the wrong size for a concert. So we decided to come to Sydney for this venue. But really, the wind inside the stadium was simply awful. So when my wife suggested we leave I was only too happy’. They related this in a good-natured manner without expressing disappointment in missing the show. In fact they were quietly relieved.
‘But we’re not sorry we came at all’, explained his wife. ‘We’ve had a wonderful weekend here, especially last night. The City was just delightful, the weather, the Harbour, the crowds, it was so exciting’. On arrival at their hotel she gently said to her husband, ‘Darling, I’m so glad we’re out of there’. ‘Absolutely’, he replied, ‘I couldn’t have taken another minute of that racket’, and they laughed easily over their lucky escape.
After they alighted I watched them stroll arm in arm across the hotel vestibule, cheerfully greeting the doorman welcoming them into the dazzling lobby. They were a happy mature couple and clearly in love. I imagined their shared silliness in attempting a pop concert at their age, not caring they’d failed but more so, elated they’d taken a chance on adventure and survived. I dare say they’ll dine out on the experience for some time.
An hour later the wind totally died and the city returned to a pleasant summer evening, perfect for Robbie William’s after party at the Opera House restaurant. Perfect for love. Like many other couples this weekend, maybe my passengers took the opportunity for an evening stroll around the waterfront. And quite possibly at some point they paused to rest, embracing for a passionate kiss. Hopefully, by now, Robbie has also got lucky.
We have tickets to RW this Thursday, standing up. I wouldn't be surprised if we leave early - Mrs VVB and I are a little younger than your couple, but not much.
