This was an absolutely fantastic game. I rushed home from work to see the last 8 overs. I swear my heart was in my mouth the entire 40 balls!!

This series has been amazing. Cricket is exciting again, who'd have thunk it :)

Kim, excuse my churlishness, I'm just trying to bait a certain English mate. As you do in cricket. And Kiwi rugby. And Aussie politics. Sheesh, I'm in one of those moods.

Aye it's true, a simply sensational game. As an Aussie mate emailed at the conclusion, That was fucking heart-stopping. 1-1 with two Tests to go!

"Give Up England"!? We're only just beginning! To hear Aussies crowing about how great their stunning draw was makes me smile. Australia stuggling to draw with England - how the times change.

Paper boy, you forgot the part about England playing their tits off, against an Australia running on about 1 cylinder and only coming out with a draw.

mr z ....
lets face it, your boys were saved by the weather on saturday.
england dominated from start to finish,, had ozzys on the rack,,, but just ran out of time.
without the rain, england would have had more time to pile on the 2nd innings runs, and wouldve had an xtra 2 sessions to bowl you out' facing an unreachable target (460+)
even lee & ooh-ahh-mcgrath couldnt hang around that long.
fact is, you failed to win, and you were celebrating.
pitch played true for both 2nd innings (england comfortably reaching 280/6).
i seriously expected oz to dig in and bat out the draw, which they did
ponting played a blinder.
i was in the ground, and it was the best atmosphere i have experienced for a cricket test.

fact is, you failed to win, and you were celebrating.

Can't deny that LH. Be warned though, this close call will only serve to galvanise the Aussies. Now we've remembered how to bat out a Test, as against One Day slogging, I predict we'll take the series 3-1.

Otherwise, what Mr. Z said.

LH,

Don't get me wrong. There's no way we deserved to win that test. The celebrations were for the fact that we didn't lose it.

But the closeness of the series is not because England are a so much more better team. It's because Australia are not playing at their proven potential.

If the Australia that toured India or New Zealand was in England right now, the result would be 3-0.

hi ozzys,
can only say that things are what they are.

"If the Australia that toured India or New Zealand was in England right now, the result would be 3-0."......
yeah, and if we had the 1981-86 team with BeefyBotham,we might be 3-0 up too.
But you dont, and we dont.. so ya gotta play the team thats out there, and we poms are doing alright, are we not?

after 1st test slaughter, oz expecting to go 2-0 up at edbaston.
after 2nd test rearguard, oz expecting to go 2-1 up at old trafford.
after 3rd test escape-from-jail, oz now expecting to go 2-1 up at trent bridge.
we shall see.
things not quite going to plan for you so far.

5-0? ... McGrath mindset stuck in the past. But i must admit, it is hard to envisage such paradigm changes, and even i am expecting oz to still win series 3-1... such is the inertia of the past 15years.

thank the ashes lord, that i was around to experience cricket since 1970, as a 7 year old kid, and able to watch lillee & thommo, as my pace heroes (together with michael holding)
... and have been able to witness plenty of england series wins!

Must say that this interest in resurgent england team bodes well for future. Premiership footie is sidelined on the back sports pages, and all cricket sets have sold out in sport/toy shops, apparently. So maybe things are gonna get better & better for english cricket.

ps.He may have been fat. He may have been round. He may have even bounced on the ground.... but good old Rod Marsh has done great stuff for us in the academy.

Still not biting Adrian!

LH, you're a lucky man to have witnessed such pace demons as Lillee, Thommo and Holding. Christ, that era seemed to produce endless West Indies speed demons. Sadly no more.

Rob, there's a great article in yesterday's Daily Telegraph titled, 'Poms can be insufferably gracious about winning'. The writer, an Aussie working in a London office, is suffering the patronising of quietly confident English fans. Tell the truth Rob, you're smirking aren't you..?

And yeah, Rodney Marsh is a traitor.

"But the closeness of the series is not because England are a so much more better team. It's because Australia are not playing at their proven potential."

It's too easy to lose sight of the situation in partisan support fever. Long term cricket fans are walking around smiling as the newspapers fill with the excitement.

Yes the weather, yes the injuries.. but Oz are not used to batting failures, and even with two of the best bowlers in the world, they cannot match England for swing... BOTH TEAMS are playing remarkably well in matches so tight-fought that mere playing skill and experience ain't enough to win a game.
