Last night I was turning off Bourke Street, Surry Hills and nearly cleaned up a cyclist. He was zooming along the new bike lane and ran a red bicycle light, without a helmet. Dope.
Later on ABC local radio the topic of the night was cycle lanes. One caller, a cyclist, insisted that they don’t carry warning bells because they’re ‘unfashionable’. It would be a safe bet the same applies to helmets and rear-view mirrors – too old school. Ditto red lights.
Imagine driving without the aid of mirrors or a seatbelt or a horn. This is what many cyclists choose to do, presumably for fashion. Sure, helmet hair can be annoying but so can a brain haemorrhage.
What’s needed is an advertising campaign to make bicycle helmets, mirrors and bells fashionable again. Scenes shot in a hospital ward should do the trick.
